It is impossibly hot today. We're somewhere in Wisconsin, and me and Luc are floating down one of those lazy rivers in some water park, holding onto each other's inner-tubes, drinking from flasks we definitely smuggled in. Not that we needed it, we were already all kinds of fucked up.
âHow do you know?â Luc asks, with no real sign one way or the other what on earth he was talking about, not to mention breaking a perfect silence in a crowded recreation area. âLike, is it some divine interference, some kind of sixth sense, some conscious decision? How do you know when you are ready to get married?â
A chuckle escapes me. What a terribly strange thing to ask. âI don't think it's a ready thing,â I respond in an even and measured tone. Trying to organize my thoughts into actual speech at this level of intoxication, with a subject as intangible as this is proving difficult for me. âI think it's a gamble thing. I mean, I'm just not willing to face the idea of a life without Liache, so I'm doing what I feel like I need to do to keep her around.â That made me sound terrible, let's try that again. âOr wait, no, I need her, and I need her to know that, so I'm vowing to spend the rest of my life with her?â
Luc bursts out into a fit of laughter, and I mean a fit, and I realize that I absolutely do not deserve her. I'll do better when I'm back at home, I'll do better when I have her to keep me sober.
â Tabarnak , you are the worst,â Luc giggles to himself. âI am amazed she still wants anything to do with you.â
âThat's fair.â
Luc groans loudly. âI'm bored, it's boring here, let's go do something.â He gets off his inner-tube and wades to the side of the 'river', climbing out easily. I follow suit, and we're off to the place with the bar. There's one around here somewhere, we saw it already.
Once more, completely wasted, we are still miraculously being served. The few incredibly alcoholic, unbelievably fruity drinks I've had put me over the edge, everything in life seems like it's being filtered through several layers of gauze, and I can't figure out if it's me that's moving in slow motion, or everybody else. Or the air just got thicker? I really can't tell. Everything is like a dream. My movements are sluggish, my reactions are slow, the world looks to me like I'm wearing dirty glasses. I take my sunglasses off to clean them several times, and when nothing works, I give up and just leave them on my face. At the very least I know they're hiding how impaired I actually am.
It seems like within milliseconds, Luc had a drink spilled all over him, somebody was bleeding, my hand hurt, and we were being carted out of the water park by big, burly men. The pavement scrapes several layers of skin from my elbows and hands as I stop my face from hitting the ground.
